Our Beliefs

Q.101. What do we pray for in the first petition?

A. In the first petition (which is, Hallowed be thy name[x]) we pray, That God would enable us and others to glorify him in all that whereby he maketh himself known;[y] and that he would dispose all things to his own glory.[z]

[x] Matt. 6:9.

[y] Ps. 67:2,3.

[z] Ps. 83 throughout.

We are here taught,

1. That the first petition in the Lord’s Prayer is, “Hallowed be thy name.”

2. That of ourselves we are unable to glorify God.

3. That we should pray that God would enable us to glorify him.

4. That we should pray that God would enable others to glorify him.

5. That we should pray that God would dispose all things to his own glory.
