Q.102. What do we pray for in the second petition?
A. In the second petition (which is, Thy kingdom come[a]) we pray, That Satan’s kingdom may be destroyed;[b] and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced,[c ourselves and others brought into it, and kept in it;[d] and that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.[e]
[a] Matt. 6:10.
[b] Ps. 68:1,18.
[c] Rev. 12:10,11.
[d] 2 Thess. 3:1. Rom. 10:1. John 17:9,20.
[e] Rev. 22:20.
We are here taught,
1. That the second petition in the Lord’s Prayer is, “Thy kingdom come.”
2. That Satan has a kingdom in this world.
3. That we should pray for the destruction of Satan’s kingdom.
4. That God in Christ hath established a kingdom of grace in the world.
5. That we should pray for the advancement of the kingdom of grace.
6. That we should pray that we ourselves may be brought into Christ’s kingdom of grace.
7. That we should pray that others may be brought into the kingdom of grace.
8. That we should pray that God would keep us in his kingdom of grace.
9. That we should pray that God would keep others in his kingdom of grace.
10. That there is approaching for the people of God a kingdom of glory.
11. That we should pray that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.
