Q.70. Which is the seventh commandment?

A. The seventh commandment is, Thou shalt not commit adultery.[f]

Q.71. What is required in the seventh commandment?

A. The seventh commandment requireth the preservation of our own and our neighbour’s chastity, in heart, speech, and behaviour.[g]

[g] 1 Cor. 7:2,3,5,34,36. Col. 4:6. 1 Pet. 3:2.


We are here taught,

1. That we are required to preserve our own chastity.

2. That we are required to avoid all occasions of temptation.

3. That we are required to be chaste in our thoughts.

4. That we are required to be chaste in our words.

5. That we are required to be chaste in our actions.

6. That we are required to preserve our neighbour’s chastity as well as our own.



Q.72. What is forbidden in the seventh commandment?

A. The seventh commandment forbiddeth all unchaste thoughts, words, and actions.[h]

We are here taught,

1. That all unchaste thoughts are forbidden.

2. That all unchaste conversation is forbidden.

3. That all unchaste actions are forbidden.
